San Jose Yacht Club, an exhibition and residency by Christopher Reynolds, marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in San Jose. San Jose Yacht Club is inspired by acts of camaraderie, tradition, and the ritualistic actions involved in obtaining a right of entry and/or membership into traditionally exclusive societies.

During a 4-week residency at Space 47, Reynolds created an installation of paintings, sculpture, and photographs that introduces a social environment not unlike an exclusive brotherhood by employing acts of initiation, role-playing, and mergers. The resulting work entertains a fictional world of hybrids inspired by time-honored traditions that investigate rank, identity, and fantasy, while questioning the collective impact and relevance of elite social practices. Welcome to the San Jose Yacht Club.

Christopher Reynolds was born and raised in Orange County, and received his B.A. in Studio Arts from the School of Fine Arts, University of Southern California in 2005. His collaborative work has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered, and recent exhibitions include Thanks Craig at The Landing Party Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, Market at Phantom Galleries LA, Long Beach, CA, This is only a test… at Backspace Gallery, Los Angeles, and Nuestra Cocina at Palmaroja Gallery, Loreto, Mexico. He is the recipient of the Ellie and John Stern Scholarship and The Festival of the Arts Foundation Scholarship. Reynolds lives and works in Los Angeles.
